Front

Front of the house, with flower beds and "fern farm".  We will eventually replace the siding to update the look of the house, once we save up enough!

Although I like the color that the barberries (purple bushes) bring, I hate that they have skinny, sharp thorns.  They are an absolute pain to weed around, so they will be replaced in the near future.  We also plan on transplanting the daylilies (clumps to the right and in the middle), since they end up sending their flower shoots up in front of the front window, and it looks overgrown.  We think we'll replace them with shorter lilies.  The mint (toward the left) may also be replaced for an azalea, or at least trimmed back before it gets too big.  It does attract bees, though, so that's beneficial.

Update! Main front flower bed revamped!

We added plants, removed plants, moved plants around, and kept some un-touched that would otherwise be trimmed, just so we know where they will grow next year.  There are new mums, an azalea, additional (but shorter) daylillies and a ton of tulip bulbs that now make a much tidier home in our main flower bed.

The backyard through the sunroom

Picture
This was taken before we closed on the house, so the previous owners fortunately took the old farm equipment decor with them.  Not too much we need to do back here, though we'd like to fill in the hole left by a few dead arborvitaes, once we figure out what killed them the first time around.  DH would like to cut down the pine tree at the far right of this photo, so that may be a project in the next few years.

The backyard from the backyard

Picture
Another photo from before the house was ours.  Thought it's a bit dark, you can see that the sunroom and the deck are on opposite sides on the house.  Not very conducive for outdoor entertaining.  Not to mention, the deck is off of the garage, so it's not great for access, either.  Ideally, I'd like to put in a french door in the dining room (first window to the left of the deck), and then either extend the deck to the family room, or rip out the deck and put in a large flagstone patio.  DH likes the latter idea... we'll see what we decide when the time and money allow!
